How to Say “I Don’t Have an ETA” Without Sounding Unhelpful
One of the hardest support messages is also one of the simplest: you do not have a reliable ETA. The mistake is trying to make uncertainty sound better by guessing. A confident response can be honest without being cold.
1. Start with what is known
Explain the confirmed issue or current status in plain language. Do not bury the useful information under a long apology.
2. Explain what is happening next
Tell the customer whether the issue has been escalated, is being investigated, or needs more information. This gives the conversation direction even when you cannot give a date.
3. Set a realistic expectation
Say clearly that you do not have a precise ETA yet. Avoid promises you cannot control. If you know when the next update will be available, say that instead.
4. Keep the customer experience human
Acknowledge the inconvenience, stay patient, and make the next action obvious. In my support work, I have found that customers often respond better to a clear honest update than to a confident-sounding deadline that later slips.
A useful structure is: acknowledge the impact, state what is known, explain the action underway, give the most realistic expectation available, and invite any information that could help move the case forward.
